Résumé
Dans l’imaginaire lao, les provinces méridionales, particulièrement Attopeu, Sékong ou Saravane, représentent des régions redoutées, car considérées largement non laocisées. De son côté, l’ethnographie, très lacunaire, du Sud-Laos a voulu y voir la simple opposition de deux “cultures”, lao et austroasiatique, contrastant avec la grande diversité culturelle du Nord. L’article considère l’histoire du processus de laocisation à l’œuvre au Sud et y montre une dynamique de l’ethnicité différente mais tout aussi complexe qu’au Nord. L’analyse des sociétés de la Haute-Sékong, censées avoir résisté à toute laocisation, notamment les Kantou (Katu), permet de s’interroger sur les conditions de la transmission et de la reproduction –au travers des guerres et jusqu’à aujourd’hui– d’un modèle social, spatial et rituel, radicalement opposé en apparence aux valeurs lao et en porte-à-faux avec les normes actuelles de la culture nationale.
Abstract
In the Lao imagination the southern provinces, especially Attapeu, Sekong and Saravan, are viewed as being largely insecure as they are not lao-icised. Ethnographically, the scanty record for Southern Laos has tended to assert a simple opposition between two ‘cultures’, the Lao and the Austroasiatic, in contrast to the broad cultural diversity of the North. This article considers the history of the process of ‘laoicisation’ in the South, and portrays a dynamic of ethnicity that is different to that in the North but just as complex. Analysis of the societies of Upper Sekong, thought to have always resisted laoicisation, especially the Kantu (Katu), allows the author to examine the conditions of transmission and reproduction –through the wars right up to the present– of a social, spatial and ritual model that is apparently opposed to Lao values and is out of step with the current norms of the national culture.
